The High Point firearms look to me to be a good budget minded series, and fairly reilable with not a lot of moving parts. There is a lot of 9mm ammo around too [even though I DO NOT like it!]

The High Point carbine is a better than merely acceptable gun for the money. It has gained a lot of respect for that lowball-price gunmaker which it didn't have before the carbine was offered, and it carries a lifetime warranty that is actually what it says it is.

I don't own one, but if I did I would prefer the .40 caliber chambering for the additional power if it is to be used for medium size game in a survival situation. But OTOH the 9mm cartridge is the most readily available centerfire handgun round on earth, and in carbine length barrels it will take small to medium size game at short range with hollow point ammo. Either round is adequate for short to medium range defense use if that is one of your criteria.

I was thinking more along the lines of having to deal with 2 legged “varmints”. I still believe that the 9mm has too much velocity to be much effective. It has a bad habit of punching through your target and leaving them still standing. This is why most LEO’s went to the .40 cal for more knock down power, but there is a heck of a lot of 9mm laying around to scrounge up in a worse case scenario.

Just my $.02 worth.

As a follow up to the High Point rifle, I spoke to an engineer at High Point, and he stated that there was some thought on a .22 version, but they could not get the proper pressures in the chamber for a “blow back” system to work right. They plan for the rifle to use all types of the calibered ammo. so the firearm would work properly. They were working on a .45 ACP version though. He also stated that people use all different types of ammo. of the type caliber called for in the firearm, but due to the inconsistencies in the manufacture of ammunition.
