1956 was Ike vs. Stevenson, and Stevenson was born in Los Angeles and was governor if Illinois. So why did Missouri go for the egghead over the general?
Other than that, Missouri is a hopeful harbinger here.

Missouri is a microcosm of the United States, with large metropolitan areas (St. Louis & Kansas City), Appalachian-like areas (the Ozarks) rural and many suburban areas.
