This is a letter we wrote today to the parents of Sarah Palin, Chuck and Sally Heath, in Wasilla, Alaska:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Heath,
We were among the forty million Americans who witnessed Governor Palin's entry onto the national stage last week. As parents of four, we could not help but sense the solemn pride that must be yours to have made such an exceptional contribution to our country.
At the conclusion of President Lincoln's service to his nation, his Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton, observed, "Now he belongs to the ages." At the conclusion of Governor Palin's speech and the commencement of her national service it is safe to say, "Now she belongs to the American people."
In Ecclesiastes 1:9 King Solomon concluded, "There is nothing new under the sun." Well, your daughter's transformative arrival as the Vice Presidential nominee is the exception to that rule. We have seen pundits searching for comparisons: the communication skills of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan...the beauty and grace of Jacqueline Kennedy and Princess Diana...all in one package. There is something new under the sun!
Where could you find such a person? The genuine article did not come from central casting in Hollywood. She came from a small town in a free society that believes that growth, prosperity, and fulfillment come from the bottom up, not from the government down. She came from loving parents who nurtured her spirit and taught her to have a servant's heart.
As you know better than we do, not everyone admires or appreciates your daughter's success. She is in good company. General Washington was criticized as having an "indecisive mind" (Henry Reed). Abraham Lincoln was denigrated as "the original gorilla" (George McClellan). Ronald Reagan was dismissed as "an amiable dunce' (Clark Clifford). Our Lord and Savior's persecution is well documented. Your daughter, a successful woman and loving mother, seems to have triggered a uniquely high level of animosity. We have never seen the press attack a candidate's children and get their allegations wrong so consistently. It takes a strong candidate and a strong family to withstand such venom.
Please know that we are among among millions of Americans who deeply respect and admire your daughter and your family.
Respectfully,
Russell Holmes, M.D. Susan Holmes
Thank you for sending that. I too was overcome with the proudness that they must be feeling as their daughter is propelled onto the national stage. I pray that they understand that the world needs her and appreciates their sacrifice.
They must be astounded that their little girl could very well become the leader of the free world. This is a great country!
The real deal clincher for me will be when we can find out exactly what her position is on Illegal Immigration and Comprehensive Amnesty.
Maybe Mom and Dad know. Inquiring minds (millions) would like a hint. ;-)
Read my tagline...

Amen.
