I love fresh veggies from the homegrown farmers market.

I can live off them no prob with a little protien. Tonight fresh Seared Tuna with a Greek Yogart/Garlic/Basil sauce.

Unfortunetly our Farmers Market is on a steep hill.

My neighbor is kind when she goes she picks up a load for me.
They dont make neighbors like her much anymore.

I was reading out local paper opinion page and somebody wrote a rant about the Farmers Market being on public tax payer land but totally unaccesible.

I had thought about doing the same. It takes 3hrs to get us out the door and qn hour to transfer back out once home so you can imagine the dissappointment we felt when we went to only look up a grassy steep hill.

Think I will go write an opinion to back up hers.

And while you are recommending, please address the (apparently widespread) problem that diabetics have with not getting enough fiber. My low-carb, 1800 calorie diet makes it a bear to get enough fiber.

I'm diabetic. I've found a bread that has made it a lot easier. It's made by Nature's Own, it's call Double Fiber Wheat bread. It's only 50 calories per slice & 13 total grams per slice - BUT - each slice has 5 grams of fiber, so if you subtract the fiber grams from the carb grams - each slice ends up being only 8 grams of carbs each.

It's been great for me, in the morning I will pack me a sandwich with sliced meat, cheese or peanut butter & sugar free jelly. Then I throw in a low-sodium V-8 & I'm getting a pretty filling lunch for not that many carbs. It keeps me from going through the drive-thru windows.

My problem with broccoli, salads and beans is the gas. Any suggestions for anything with NO side-effects to help curtail gas? I have learned that a few raisins before a meal can help decrease stomach acid....

Lose weight, eat eggs// 05 Sep 2008

In a study, consumers eating two eggs for breakfast compared to a bagel breakfast of similar calories lost 65% more weight.

A new study published by the International Journal of Obesity has shown that consuming two eggs for breakfast, as part of a reduced-calorie diet, helps overweight adults feel more energetic and lose more weight than those who ate a bagel breakfast of equal calories, according to the American Egg Board (AEB).

“Apparently, increased energy and satiety from consuming eggs helps people better comply with a reduced-calorie diet,” explained Dr. Nikhil V. Dhurandhar, lead researcher and associate professor in the laboratory of infection and obesity at Louisiana State University’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center.

Compared to people in the study who ate a bagel breakfast, men and women who ate the two eggs lost 65% more weight, exhibited 61% more reduction in body mass and reported higher levels of energy, according to the study.

No effect on cholesterol
Furthermore, blood lipids were not affected during the two-month study as high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and triglycerides did not vary from the baseline levels of the participants in either of the breakfast programs, according to the study.

AEB said this adds to more than 30 years of research concluding that healthy adults can consume eggs without significantly affecting their heart disease risk.

High quality protein
AEB also said the study adds to a growing amount of research that supports the importance of high-quality protein in the diet, citing last May’s American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that contained nine research articles focusing on the value of high-quality protein in the diet. An important conclusion was that a diet inadequate in protein contributes to muscle loss, obesity and increased risk of chronic disease.

The study supports earlier research showing that women who ate eggs for breakfast felt more satisfied and consumed fewer calories at their next meal.

OK Doc, how do you reconcile the recommendations in this article with carb and sodium limits? Brocolli, carrots, beans, shakes, and cereals all carry a significant carb load. Most of the broth soups I have looked at are high in sodium.

Here is a curve that I love to throw at my diet advisors. I am allergic to a lot of vegetables, most notably in this article is tomatoes, and almost all fresh fruits and melons. This creates a lot of problems for me in maintaining a balanced diet. Any recommendations?

And while you are recommending, please address the (apparently widespread) problem that diabetics have with not getting enough fiber. My low-carb, 1800 calorie diet makes it a bear to get enough fiber.

I'm a FP doc, not a dietitian. Considering your food allergies, you may have to track down a registered dietitian at a hospital.

No, if I was glutton I’d eat six of them. If you think I’m a liar, I can arrange for my wife to verify my eating habits.

A bagel breakfast is something I have never had. Not even once! I did find the problem though.

I don’t squat to pee. Your study is based on females not males.

Yes, but I can't eat salsa without corn chips, and then I'd be mixing my food groups again.

just burn some extra calories... park in the farthest parking space, take the stairs, walk around while talking on the phone... btw--did you know that 3 dairy foods a day has been linked to faster weight loss? i swear by this... i have 1-2 yogurts and 1 cheese a day... plus, one serving of cheese does not have many calories...

Are you able to exercise? My husband plays golf, and has found that walking the course has been very beneficial. I think it's about six miles. He's lost thirty pounds since this time last year. He was testing his blood at 130 to 140, with peaks to about 160 a year ago. Now he's testing at 106 to 112, generally around 104 to 107.

When he was first diagnosed, a nutritionist put him on a low calorie, low protein diet. His weight just kept going up and up. Thank goodness for Atkins and Citrucel.

I tested myself, too, although no one in my family has ever developed diabetes. I wanted to see what it was like, and it was interesting.

I am “able” to exercise. I am real good at making excuses not to but I’m working on that part too. I did a lot of yard work thru the late spring and summer. It paid off with dropping 11 lbs from May to Aug. My job has changed in a way that makes me walk the length of our huge warehouse more and I am continuing with my yard work as well.

My average is running in the low 100s (101-105 the last 30 days). But coming from the 275 range 6 months ago I am having a lot of hypoglycemic incidents with any amount of exercise.

My family history is another reason for me to be ashamed of my actions. There is a huge history on my mom’s side of family. My oldest brother (62) is the last of the 8 of us kids to be diagnosed with diabetes. One aunt and one brother were Type I and killed by it. I certainly knew better than to eat the way that I have the last few years.

I’m only a C student at best in life lessons but I do eventually learn.

My husband works with someone who is unable to give up pasta, bread and deserts. He can't seem to lose weight and recently started on insulin injections. I know it's hard.

Best of luck to you, FRiend.
