Read some Karl Marx and you will understand what he is talking about. Leftists are always looking for ways that we (not themselves, just we) can make sacrifices that will make vast, but undefined, improvements in the common good. In the case of the Soviet Union, millions sacrificed their lives to that lofty goal of achieving a "new day and a new age". Do we really want to try that failed experiment again in this country? I don't think so.
