From what I’ve read, here’s how it went:
The Bridge to Nowhere deal was underway well before she became Governor. Prior to that, she did support it, and it was going to be funded by both the Alaskan government and federal earmarks.
As time passed, costs ballooned (as they are wont to do with anything government-related).
By the time she got into office as Governor, the cost for the Bridge to Nowhere was many times larger than it had initially been, and the federal government was demanding Alaska pick up a larger share of the tab. I’m not sure what came next at this point; Sarah Palin ending the deal (”Thanks but no thanks”), or Congress nixing the specific designation that the earkmark money be used on the Bridge to Nowhere.
IIRC, the allotted funds were then used for other things.
I think that’s the basic gist of it...
