People are folling themselves if they think McCain doing one conservative act by picking Palin will suddenly and magically change his left leaning actions over the years or erase the many times he has voted with the socialist RATS on many issues.
Presidential candidates choose running mates because the latter agrees with the former on an overwhelming majority of the key issues. Palin is not going to change McCain's stance on such key issues as amnesty for illegal aliens, the human induce global warming fallacy etc... She will have to acquiesce to him.

While I don't expect her to effect major changes in McCain, I believe you are a bit pessimistic. I certainly cannot hurt to have a solid conservative voice, with real family values and integrity, whispering in your ear day in and day out. McCain changed his views on drilling because he heard the roar from the People. Palin will serve as a direct connection to the pulse of the People and will probably lend a bit of balance and objectivity to some of the decisions McCain makes. I would rather have her giving opinions on SCOTUS nominations than any of the other VeeP possibilities.
While she may not make a huge difference, she should make a positive difference. I'm good with that.

Essentially McCain has told conservatives "let me rule now, and i'll put one of your own in direct position to succeed me, win or lose."
