Per WFTV there is high pressure creeping in with clockwise winds which gives Florida a dome of high pressure keeping Gustav to the South. This also moves Gustav towards the West. Next week there will be a cold front near the Gulf of Mexico (Texas/New Orleans). If this front is weak, the storm lingers and could move their direction. If strong, it pushes the storm closer to Florida. They are hoping the strength of the storm will lessen over Haiti and possibly make contact with Cuba.
[Corrine D-FL] Brown's neighbor, Joe Deloach, said he was battling high water as well but couldn't get the crew to come help him.
I meant how all of Gustov’s tracks miss us. No....I’ll keep my mouth shut now..... :(
susie
And if that district sends her back to DC, they deserve what they get.
It’s much too early to worry a lot in New Orleans.. If it looks like the target now that will probably change. I’d still go west myself.. Texas for now.
We had guests after Dolly. We had power and took in 4 people and a dog for 5 days after Dolly. My guests didn’t care if the house was clean or not as long as the AC was working.
Our property still looks like a disaster. We still have about 7 trees to be cut and removed. That’s about half of the trees we lost. Our city block long driveway is lined on both sides with brush. I am not ready to go thru another storm!
Well, the more it goes west the better chance it will have to retain intensity I think. Many northerly or northeastly moving storms in the Gulf weaken headed toward landfall — even Katrina did so. That’s not to say a weakening storm can’t be a major cat 3 or 4 cane.
U.S. Rep. Corrine "had to call and call and call" Brown (D-FL)
I thought you meant all hurricanes. My bad.
Will remember that the next time I get the nesting instinct during a hurricane warning.
I can sympathize with your downed trees. Was in NC when Fran came through. Had seven trees propped against the eaves of the roof for 105 days. It was good burning wood when they were finally cut down. Otherwise, it was depressing to look at old dead trees through the big bay window.
Are we immune? What are the odds of lightning striking twice? (back to back storms)
I moved back to Dothan from Panama City Beach last year. I lived right on the water. Insurance rates and property tax rate increases went through the roof.
Actually, I’m amazed how many times the severe weather seems to bypass Dothan just as it gets near the city. Am not sure why.
Dothan did get hammered by Hurricane Opal but so did Montgomery which is 100 miles north.
At least this year’s rain have significantly lessened the water shortage here although we are still below the normal rain fall amount for the previous two years.
As soon as I finish this post I’ll be outside picking up twigs and fallen small tree branches from Fay’s visit.
There’s something about the pent up energy from a formerly Cat 5 storm in the GOM. They cause wicked storm surge and damage. Visited the MS Gulf coast last week from Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, to Gulfport/Biloxi. While a tremendous effort has been spent rebuilding, the utter devastation was still very visible. There are still streets in Pass Christian that haven’t yet been re-graded. Gulfport has beautiful new homes along the Gulf Coast Hwy—right next to concrete foundations from the destroyed homes.
yea... there’s some really warm water just to the west..and, the NWS is predicting “Low shear environment”.... so, I’d bet Gustav blows up pretty quick..
That’ll grab all the news attention...
But, I don’t think it’ll be able to hold the power level.. Still though, as you say, could very easily be a 3 or weak 4 when it hits..
Rita was a 3, and it messed up SW Louisiana pretty bad...
In 2004, Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne made landfall within five miles of each other in Stuart, FL.
Nahhh you can fish any time!!
There’s a lot of warm water all over the Gulf, plus it will have plenty of time to build up. I would bet a 4 by the time it hits, but you’re right, Rita was only a 3 still caused plenty of damage.
I wonder if she has any cash in the freezer.....
