Financially troubled Century City Doctors Hospital gave up hope of finding a buyer and began shutting down Friday, according to hospital executives. Officially, the facility said it would cease operations late next week.
The hospital's emergency room -- a key element of the county's increasingly fragile emergency safety net -- will be closed today, and about 30 remaining patients will be discharged or transferred to nearby facilities beginning this weekend.
Regionally, 14 emergency rooms have been closed in the last five years, including 10 in Los Angeles County. After the closure, there will be 74 ERs remaining in the county.
On Friday, the hospital filed for financial liquidation under Chapter 7 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Employees said they didn't get paid this week; other employees said payroll checks they received had bounced.
Hospital executives said they were petitioning the federal Bankruptcy Court to use emergency funds to pay employees as early as next week but acknowledged that they might not be able to do so.
"I haven't been paid in two weeks and I'm afraid I'm just not going to get paid," Tamara Tobin, a nursing assistant, said as she arrived at the hospital Friday.
The 176-bed facility, on Century Park East in the Century City Medical Plaza, has tried for months to improve its finances but has struggled to pay its growing debt, which the hospital estimated in a recent interview with The Times at more $60 million.
"It's really unfortunate" the hospital is closing, said Pat Wolfram, its interim chief executive. "Even this morning, we were trying to get a buyer and remain open but it just didn't happen. This is a great hospital and it's very sad."

well, I suspect, expect & HOPE that there is gonna be a reawakening in congress next year and the clowns in D.C. are gonna have to address the issue of illegals and free medical care as well as many other issues...we just cannot afford to be the world’s free nipple any longer!

Here is what I see as the “dirty little secret” in all this:
Liberals WANT hospitals to fail. They WANT the systems to get overloaded and be unable to provide care.
They want health care to fail badly enough to get the majority of voters to clamor for the government to ride in on a white horse and fix it.
What most of those people who WOULD clamor for it don’t realize is that they won’t be knights on white horses, they are going to be more like the guys on the black horses in the “Lord of The Rings” movies.

Twenty-first century California is disturbingly reminiscent of the Old South--dominated by delusionals who refuse to face reality and cannot imagine destruction. The Fall of California promises to be every bit as tragic as the Fall of Dixie and for very much the same reasons--hubris and denial.
I loved the title of that movie "To Live and Die in L.A."
I wonder how many California Leftists fail to grasp the irony.
This racket has become legendary:
A Mexican woman in the advanced stages of labor crosses the US Border and presents herself to a hospital. The hospital by law must accept her and deliver her baby. She does not pay them--for her, it's free. The baby is an Anchor Baby, born in the US and a US citizen; so she signs up for welfare. Because she's had no prenatal care, hers is a high-risk delivery. She sues the doctors and the hospital for malpractice and collects.
Things are going right according to plan.
Soon when more hospitals close...EVERYONE will be demanding that FedGov take over healthcare.

Not just CA's....There are plenty of my fellow NYSers who think the nation's taxpayers owe them a living.
If you are voting GOP or DNC this election...you are voting for illegal aliens...pretty much a vote for McCain is a wasted vote on America.
If you are not voting third-party or independent this election....you will definitely be voting for a liberal
