Was this a news broadcast or something. I never heard of rogue waves until this happened to our family? Thanks for the comment.

Was this a news broadcast or something. I never heard of rogue waves
until this happened to our family?

I can’t recollect the exact year, but I suspect it was some where in
the time frame of 1995-2000.
I think there was one fellow swept out to sea by a rogue wave tall
enough to sweep over a breakwater and carry him away.
And I think I saw a video of a rogue wave that hit the shore somewhere
in Northern California. I don’t recall if anyone perished due to
that one.

As I’ve said, it has made me more cautious on trips to the ocean shore!

The History Channel has a one-hour special on rogue waves a couple of
years ago (link below). Even though it was produced as a tie-in with
the re-make of “The Poseidon Adventure”, it was a good documentary
and covered the general disbelief in rogue waves (at sea) until recent
film/photo evidence arose. IIRC, there are now plans to monitor the
appearance of rogue waves via satellite surveillance.

A number of ships damaged or lost is included in the Wikipedia article
(second link below).

Nature is wonderful...but not always.
