SALEM Salem State College has been bombarded with phone calls ever since former presidential candidate John Edwards announced last Friday that he cheated on his cancer-stricken wife.
They are calling Salem State, of course, because John and Elizabeth Edwards are scheduled to speak here Sept. 23. Everyone wants to know if the event has been canceled.
It has not.
Salem State says it has a contract and is sticking to it. Edwards also apparently is scheduled to hold a press conference. Whether one or both of those events come off, only time will tell.
The first phone call to the college was from a political Web site politickerma.com. They actually broke the news to Salem State. In all, the college received about 20 calls, including one from a newspaper in Edwards' home state of North Carolina. The scandal and Salem State also got mentioned on "Entertainment Tonight."
"It almost seems like the media is more interested in it than the general public," said college spokesman Jim Glynn.
Salem State, coincidentally, sent out a flier this week pushing tickets for "A Conversation with John and Elizabeth Edwards." It has photos of a beaming Edwards and his wife on the cover.
Ticket sales are about on schedule, Glynn said. There was a "small spike" after the announcement of the extramarital affair, and also a few cancellations.
Asked how many, Glynn said "under 10."

I heard that Edwards will tell you he will show up but he is actually speaking at Suffolk University that night instead. Suffolk is newer and sexier than Salem State!
I miss steak tip subs at Champions in Peabody!
He will not show.
A couple of my friends went to Suffolk...
May have eaten at Champions; I knew there was a place
nr there where I once ate, good for steak tips, sports
bar type place. Probably it. Here in Beverly it’s either
steak tips & salad or pizza and salad, either...with
PABST! BLUE! RIBBON! ($2 draft) at the Pickled Onion,
plus the various 99s around the area of course!
Love the Onion!
