An East Boston sicko is facing up to 25 years in state prison for stomping a neighborhood cat to death, lighting its carcass on fire and nearly burning down an apartment building into which he threw the torched tabby.
Luigi Epifania, 25, will be sentenced Monday for last year’s death of “Nunu,” in what Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley called “a cruel and cowardly act.”
A Suffolk Superior Court jury convicted Epifania yesterday of arson and killing a domestic animal, but that’s just the beginning of his troubles.
He still faces trial on a separate charge of attempted murder for slashing a man on Saratoga Street June 11, 2007, during an alleged botched drug sale, forcing the man to strip naked and climb into a shower and then threatening him again with a hot frying pan.
It was after the alleged Saratoga Street assault, while Boston police had Epifania in custody for a warrant charging him with unlawful possession of a firearm, that he confessed to the cat killing, prosecutors said.
Epifania told police he went looking for an acquaintance at 204 Princeton St. the morning of June 13, 2007, but was turned away and fell asleep on a staircase.
Epifania said he awoke to Nunu looking for attention and began petting the cat, but “lost it” and kicked and stomped the defenseless animal to death, stuffed the body in a paper bag, set it ablaze with lighter fluid and threw it through a window of the building.
Prosecutors said the structure endured “significant damage” to its first floor. Witnesses were able to provide descriptions of the arsonist they saw running away, which matched Epifania’s build and clothing.

25 Years. In Massachusetts, if he did the same thing to a child he’d probably be given a 15 year sentence with 10 years suspended, and with time served be out on probabtion in 6 months.
