Wikipedia has shown time and time again to be liberal biased and bend to the whims of Political Correctness. I’d rather research it on my own than read their rubish. No offence to you, of course.

Total bullcrap. Truk was a major base for Japan and a major anchorage for the Imperial Navy. In planning the island hopping (as in not having to take every friggin island in the Pacific) it had been decided to bypass Truk. It therefore had to be neutralized. Hence, the raid on Truk, which did just that.

I suppose you could consider that "revenge" in the sense the whole war was "revenge" for an unprovoked attack on the U.S., but fair minded people who are not anti-American POS's would consider it self-defence against aggression.

I wonder if the Beeb considers the Burma campaign "revenge" for Singapore?

So I'm not saying the Japanese were "nice guys," far from it. But in terms of shere wanton murder, they did not top the Nazis.

I'd day they surpassed the nazis in terms of casual cruelty. I can point to the Rape of Nanking and the Bataan Death March, but I'm sure there are countless other atrocities which are less well known. The Japanese enlisted men loved to use their bayonets.

> But in terms of shere numbers killed, the war in Europe accounted for 35 million of the total 55 million deaths. When you see this broken down by country (and I don’t have the list in front of me right now), you see the Nazis responsible for tens of millions, the Japanese “only” millions.

You can find a “league table” of casualties for WW-II here: http://www.world-war-2.info/casualties/

The number for China alone was 1.3 million soldiers and 7.75 million civilians.

Germany did kill more people than Japan did, but Japan’s numbers are right up there.

> In eastern Europe, they were brutal beyond all comparison, killing tens of millions, not even including the Holocaust.

Tens of millions, not including the Holocaust? Surely a slight exaggeration, no? You’ll find a WW-II casualty “league table” here: http://www.world-war-2.info/casualties/

Japan was no slouch at atrocities, either. Check out the civilian casualties for China, for example.

It is indeed the most awesome wreck diving around. We were there in 2/04.

Thanks for the ping. He will probably want to at least check it out. Don’t trust the BBC though. As you know, we have our own movie of those dives.

Your link did not work for me, but try this one instead:

World War Two death statistics

As I read it -- when you round & summarize, Nazi Germans were responsible for the deaths of roughly:

20 million Soviets
3 million Poles (not including Jews)
6 million Jews
2 million Yugoslavs
2+ million others from Hungary, France, UK, Greece & Netherlands, etc.

33 million total

In China the Japanese were responsible for 2 million military and 4 million civilian deaths -- 6 million total, a huge number (!) but less than those caused by Nazi Germans.

Yes, of course, anyone can dispute these numbers -- please note the range of estimates reported.

We might be talking about two different things here.

You seem to be saying that typical Japanese soldiers were capable of greater individual cruelty than most Germans. No argument from me on that -- if that's your point, I agree with you.

My point is: if you look at estimates of TOTAL numbers killed in WWII, the Japanese TOTALS are fewer than those for the Germans, by a considerable amount -- even if you exclude the Holocaust of Jews.

Check out my post above, and this link:
