Looking for a firearm friendly freeper int the Los Angeles area.
8/9/08 | Me

Posted on 08/09/2008 6:19:32 PM PDT by Jeff Gordon

I am looking for a freeper in the LA area who would be willing help me out.

I received a latter in the mail from the LA Police Department. They have recovered a firearm that was stolen from me over a decade ago. They would like to return it to me however there is a catch.

I, or my "agent," has to pick up the firearm at a LA police station. They will dispose of the firearm at the end of October if I do not pick it up before then. My problem is that I live is San Jose and never have occasion to be in LA

I am looking for a LA freeper who would be willing to act as my agent, pick up the firearm and UPS it up to me. I would be willing to pay you for your trouble.

If you think you might be able to do this for me, please send me a freepmail.

Any alternative suggestions or advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

You make some good points, and there are dangers involved in having strangers handle valuable personal property.

I have known of too many horror stories out of California, where police have been involved in legalized theft of firearms for decades, not to comment on the weird inversion that citizens experience of being first victimized by criminals, then by the police!

I would hope that the police would at least be willing to ship the firearm to a dealer near him in order to return it, if he would pay the shipping costs.

If this story is legit, and you were payed the insurance money 10 years ago, then let them destroy the weapon. You do not want a formerly stolen weapon in your possession, even if it is all cleared up by the police. You can bet that sometime in the future, your weapon will still be listed as stolen in some database that has not been updated.

Fred, This was the best post on the thread.

And the most ignored.

Jeff, this is really a no brainer. Make the call.

I would not be trusting just any stranger. I would be trusting a freeper who minimally would supply me a copy of his CDL, name, address, and phone number. I would cross check the phone number to make sure the name and phone number match. I would call the the person to make the final arrangement. The police would also be checking the ID of the stranger against the notarized agent authorization form from me.

I would rather pay a fellow freeper part of that $140+ then give it to the Middles East Oil barons.

The post was not ignored by my. I will make that call after I call the La Police and learn all the details of the firearm they are holding. As others have pointed out, the current condition of the firearm may render it to be junk

IF you want that gun back, you’re going to have to go get it yourself.

If it isn’t registered, you will have to register it and provide fingerprints as the owner.

Otherwise, let the gun go...

The police were able to connect the gun to me because it is registered to me.

Just because I like you I will let you be my agent. I will pay you $400 for your trouble. I have a cashier's check for $1000. I will send it to you. You can cash it. Take out your $400 and send me the remaining $600 along with the gun.

joke

Sorry, but that's a pretty poor excuse not to pick up your own weapon. There's gas companies out there who don't get their oil from the Middle East, and I'm sure there's plenty of them in San Jose and L.A.

Does this mean that you will not act as my agent in this matter?

Not unless you want to pay my airfare from New York to California, plus expenses. Somehow I think not. Having spent a career in law enforcement, I wouldn't touch this baby with a ten foot pole.

The end of the story

I called the LA PD today. They gave me the serial number of the gun they had. I looked in my records. I have a gun registered to me with that serial number. I verified that that particular gun was safely in my gun safe. I informed the detective of this fact.

The detective admitted that he had transcribed the serial number incorrectly. The gun they have is not mine. It is also, sadly, not the gun that was stolen over a decade ago.

End of story.

I am pinging those of you who posted friendly or useful responses. Thank you. Freeperland is a great place.

I completly agree. I would alert anyone who takes on this task. As sad as it may be that we can not offer a helping hand nor ask for one, but I have read enough “sting opperations” to be very wary.
