“Yes, the ChiComs love the USA so much that they are willing to arm Iran and the terrorists in Iraq to prove it /sarc”

Try, if you are capable of it, to think of the Chinese people separate from their government. The people don’t set policy, their gov’t in China does. You see many Chinese trying to get into our country illegally, and I can speak from firsthand knowledge that they love coming to our country for their college education (I retired from working at a major public University). The Chinese people probably feel the same about the Bush Admin as we do about the Chinese Admin. Our country is chock full of Chinese people who work hard, make money, and become very Americanized the further along the generations go. I know because my best friend adopted two Chinese girls from China and they are as American now as you and I. So, take your “sarc” elsewhere, thank you.

I remember four years ago when Costas--reacting to an enthusiastic reception for U.S. athletes--blurted out something about the people of Athens being conscientious enough to separate a nation's people from a nation's leadership (or foreign policy, or something). Tonight, when there was yet again a warm welcome for the U.S., Costas said nothing. Apparently, he can improve. Maybe in a few hundred years, he'll have learned enough to shut up and let the ceremony unfold on its own. By the way, the reason the U.S. always earns among the liveliest response at Olympic ceremonies is the *same* reason the U.S. receives the most criticism from so-called world-opinion: the U.S. is the current superstar of the world. As we all experience in our celebrity-obsessed culture, fame elicits hate and love in equal measure. The global community will decry the corrupt American empire out of side of their mouths, and speak English, drink coke, and sing along to rock music out of the other side, so long as Americans are exceptional.

I'll probably get killed for saying this, but I wish our gals would wear skirts and maybe something a little more feminine...

I'm in trouble now...

Decent slide show of ceremony .. at the end, it looked like Sarah Brightman on stage, but I didn’t hear her voice at all. Strange.

Put the video control on the right to full screen, for the most dramatic views. This was an incomparable exercise of planning and minute detail and training. Just amazing.

Oriental video of US team entrance into ceremony .. at the 3:58 mark.

Shows Pres. Bush and Mrs. Bush waving, then a bit later Henry Kissinger waving to them.

Both standard and HD recordings of the event are available via Torrent. I downloaded the standard definition one while the athletes were still coming in. I started my download 17 minutes after the torrent was put up and it took about 1.5 hours to receive it all. It may be faster now with more people seeding the file, but there are a lot of leechers too, so it could be slower. The version I’m watching right now is BBC, so there’s a bit less of the absolutely moronic play-by-play that was heard from the NBC commentators. It is pretty amazing stuff to watch.

Very weird ... Brightman DID sing .. but I never heard her announced or saw her. And if I remember this song correctly (it's on the video above) it was the male singer singing, the female voice was just background humming ... hmmpf.

Chinese singer Liu Huan (R) and British soprano Sarah Brightman jointly present the theme song of the Beijing Olympic Games, "You and Me", during the art performance of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, titled "Beautiful Olympics", in the National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, in north Beijing, China, Aug. 8, 2008.

The theme song of the Beijing Olympic Games, "You and Me," was unveiled at the Games' opening ceremony in the National Stadium in north Beijing on Friday night.

Chinese singer Liu Huan and British soprano Sarah Brightman jointly presented the song.

Liu, 45, is one of the most popular singers in China, while Sarah Brightman, 48, is a world famous soprano as well as an actress, song writer and dancer.

Pretty much every other nation does, I don’t see why we don’t either. It looked like the United States sent the largest ivy league crew team in history.

First, you need a torrent client like uTorrent (that's the one I use and recommend). They have versions for Windows and Linux. www.utorrent.com. It is free.

Install the application and then you can download the Opening Ceremony broadcast from Here. This is the BBC broadcast and it does not include the entrance of the athletes nor the lighting of the cauldron and fireworks that occurred after the athletes entered. It is about 600mb, but there are actually more seeders than there are leechers right now. There's an HD version that is much larger (3.25gb) right here, but I have not tried it yet. I'm downloading it right now, but getting awful download rate.

LOL! From the sound of this thread I may be the only person in the world not enjoying this! Maybe I’ll just skip ahead to the fireworks. Somebody mentioned Lillehammer. I have very fond memories of Lillehammer myself, and Sydney. I don’t remember if the ceremonies were great, but I really enjoyed them. The games that year were really great. Anyway, thanks for the photos!

Go Reno!

I compete in winter sports in the Reno area. (I'm just an amateur, so I don't resemble a modern Olympian in the least.)

The last thing in the world I want is the corrupt scumbags of the IOC - and their associated American tax-payer money guzzling lackeys - coming over and ruining a good thing.

I thought it was the most beautiful opening ceremony I've ever seen. The nod to traditional Chinese culture and the philosophical schools of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism was outstanding. And no Chinese production would have been complete without a tribute to the martial arts. The Chinese take calisthenics very seriously... its the union of body, mind and soul in the graceful way people do their workouts every day in China.
