"The real problem with Stillwell is that he tried to win WWII on the back of the Chinese military - something that was not within the ability of the Nationalists."
And I will answer by saying that Stillwell was charged with trying to salvage the war in China by assisting, read advising, the Nationalists on how and with what logistics and manpower they had, to fight the war themselves. Chiang did not like this. He preferred to warehouse his supplies for the coming scenario at wars end - Nationals vs Communists. He, CKS, did have the foresight to understand this was the coming reality. And he used the war to rid himself of possible post-war contenders and opposition to that might arise in the KMT ranks. Also to establish binding alliances with the Bamboo Union Chinese mafia group in Shang Hai who he would bring with him to Taiwan and later be very useful for his aims. Chiang, and his crony Soong, were the living example of "Wu Wei Erh, Wu Pu Wei"* which characterizes his then, and now later, Taiwanese political/military philosophy.
