If you want good pitted against evil in a fictional form, try
“This Present Darkness” by Frank E. Peretti.

It was difficult to put down. Evil, without being gory, and an excellent view of what is happening to the world today.

The Feast of the Goat - Mario Vargas Llosa
Historical fiction about the regime of Rafael Trujillo

The Bad Girl - Mario Vargas Llosa

The Lonely Sea and the Sky - Sir Francis Chichester
You'll have to hunt for this one....it's long out of print, but the greatest adventure story I have ever read, especially if your a fan of early aviation.

Good vs. evil always makes a really good story especially if there is a timely relevance to it. Thank you!

They sound intriguing, I looked them up. I’ve used Powells.com for ordering books out of print at times.
Thank you!

I hope you enjoy them. Thanks for mentioning Powells.....I am going to check them out.

You may also want to check out Paul Theroux. I especially like Riding the Iron Rooster, Dark Star Safari and The Pillars of Hercules . Theroux's liberal biases sometimes come through, but he is a master travel writer and I have read most of his books.

Another fiction author to check out is James Carlos Blake. Most fiction rings hollow for me, but Blake has worked for me. Blake's writing tends to be very violent. Borderlands is an intriguing collection of his short fiction.

The best current detective noir writer out there is probably Dennis Lehane.

Noir est pour moi.

I will check this out.

Thanks

The others that you mentioned sound great too, I know what you mean about fiction too, I like it to be ultra interesting early on. But I do like both fiction and non.
Thanks!

Heard about Ender's Shadow. In fact, I saw it at the library a week ago (no reserving from other branches or anything, like I usually have to do). But I'm in the middle of stuff at the moment and the book was HUGE (especially compared to Ender's Game).

But I'll get to it.

The only other OSC I've read is the "novel" Gloriously Bright, which was published in Analog many, many years ago, and is set in Ender's universe, and Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus, which was cool and a totally different take on revisionist history.

As promised, here's the Pumpkin Cheesecake Recipe. I could not find my copy of the book (must be loaned out) so I found it online. This is a newer version using ginger snaps for the crust instead of graham crackers so pick your preference ...

Thank you for the recipe, it sounds great. I put it on my favorites. I did make a cheesecake once with a gingersnap crust and it really gives it a nice taste.

Glad you like it - I bet you’re right - the ginger snap will probably give it a nice zing!

Have you read this book? The Last Generation: Young Virginians in Peace, War, and Reunion. By Peter S. Carmichael

No. I haven't heard of this.

Sort of dry, ;) pretty academic, but still interesting.
It’s a study of 121 young Virginia men born between 1830 and 1843 who served as officers in the Confederacy.
The author’s website.

“Gloriously Bright” got reworked into a longer novel in the series - “Xenocide”.

I will have to check out “Pastwatch” - sounds interesting...
