Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

The Sign
Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill. —Philippians 1:15

A pastor friend told me about a sign he had seen in front of a neighborhood church. Instead of just advertising the congregation’s own time of worship, the sign also listed the schedule for two other churches that met at different times in the same small town. Interestingly, my friend didn’t think this was impractical or foolish. Instead, he imagined what it must do for a church to put such unselfishness at the heart of everything it did!

Whether it is a good idea to advertise the worship times of other churches is a matter of opinion. But one thing is certain—the Spirit of Christ is not found in a spirit of envy and self-serving competition. The generosity and goodwill that Paul expressed toward self-serving church leaders is a mark of the authentic Christian spirit (Phil. 1:14-18). This Christlike attitude lines up with the absence of spiritual competition James called for in his epistle (James 3:14-17).

Churches ought to be concerned about building their congregations. But beware of setting the bar too low by worrying about numbers. The wisdom and grace of Christ are not necessarily found in conventional wisdom. Good judgment often requires that we perform counter-intuitive acts of unselfishness that reflect Jesus’ life in us.

More like the Master I would live and grow,
More of His love to others I would show;
More self-denial, like His in Galilee,
More like the Master I long to ever be. —Gabriel

Nothing is more pleasing to God than self-sacrifice that grows out of obedience.

Thanks again, Cardi. Lauterbrunnental is my old stomping ground--where we hiked up into the mountains among four generations of Swiss that were doing much the same thing on the tamer inclines. Stechelberg is where we caught the Postbus back to our hotel. Ah, memories.

Very interesting picture, Meg, that would seem to show, improbably, a gaseous solar system. Valet, my rocket, please.

I'm flying
(Flying, flying, flying)
Look at me way up high,
Suddenly here am I
I'm flying.

I'm flying
(Flying, flying, flying)
I can soar
I can weave and what's more
I'm not even trying.

High up, and as light as I can be.
I must be a sight lovely to see.

I'm flying.
(Flying, flying, flying)
Nothing will stop me now:
Higher still look at how
I can zoom around,
‘Way up off the ground
I'm flying.

I fly and I'm all over the place
You try and you fall flat on your face.

I'm flying.
(Flying, flying, flying)
Over bed, over chair
Duck your head, clear the air
Oh, what lovely fun
Watch me everyone
Take a look at me
A see how easily it's done
I'm flying!

Ah, ah, flying!
Like an owl, like a bat,
Or the crow,
It's so satisfying!

I'm whizzing
Through a cloud
Past the star
I'm so proud
Look how far I breeze in
High over the moon
Higher I fly
By old mister moon
Wave me goodbye.

I'm flying.
(Flying, flying, flying)
Heading far out of sight
Second star to the right
Now the way is clear
Never Land is near
Follow all the air
Cause I'm about to disappear
I'm flying!

Ok, everyone, take the second right and fly straight till dawn!

.

Jupiter, Vesta, and the Milky Way

Explanation: In this gorgeous skyscape, gas giant Jupiter along with the stars and cosmic dust clouds of the Milky Way hang over the southern horizon in the early morning hours as seen from Stagecoach, Colorado, USA. Recorded on Thursday, Jupiter is the brightest object near picture center.

Along with the stunning Milky Way, Jupiter is hard to miss, but a careful inspection of the view also reveals main belt asteroid Vesta. Of all the asteroids Vesta is the brightest and is now just bright enough to be visible to the naked eye from locations with very dark, clear skies. Vesta (as well as Jupiter) appears relatively bright now because it is near opposition, literally opposite the Sun in planet Earth's sky and closest to Earth in its orbit.

For Vesta, this opposition offers the best viewing in many years. The year 2007 also coincides with the 200th anniversary of the asteroid's discovery. Starting late next month, NASA plans to launch the Dawn mission intended to explore Vesta (and Ceres) and the main asteroid belt. May 2007
