Heavenly creatures.

If you want a movie where Frodo Baggins meets King Kong this isn’t it! However, one link is arguably the best director of the last 20 years, Peter Jackson. Unlike his later movies, this was not to become box office gold.

Telling the true story of 2 child killers from New Zealand in the 1950’s, we first set our eyes on a young Kate Winslett as Juliet Hulme making mincemeat of her French teacher (I wish I could have done that) and for the first time attracting the attention of Pauliene Rieper, who is played delectably by newcomer Melanie Lynskey.

Pauline and Juliet’s magical fantasy world is brought to the screen by amazing digital effects, which are purposely blended in. And don’t forget to look out for Peter Jackson who manages to write in a kiss from Kate Winslett.

For anyone with an interest in movies from New Zealand, Peter Jackson, or the rare sight of a masterpiece, this one’s for you!

Favourite quote (as mentioned above)

Juliet Hulme: [Juliet has just arrived at her new school. For French class she has taken the name Antoinette] Excuse me, Miss Waller, you've made a mistake. "Je doutais qu'il vienne" is in fact the spoken subjunctive.

Miss Waller: It is customary to stand when addressing a teacher, [pause]

Miss Waller: Antoinette.

Juliet Hulme: [stands] You should have written "vînt".

Miss Waller: I must have copied it incorrectly from my notes.

Juliet Hulme: [stands] You don't need to apologize, Miss Waller. I found it frightfully difficult myself until I got the hang of it.

I was at an age when a movie with Nazis and elephants was irresistible.

Hard Day’s Night. While old, it contains lots of nice tunes. It was arguably the beginning of MTV. It was one long music video. Walter Shenson said he’s been called the father of MTV, but he wants a blood test to prove paternity. John, Paul, George, & Ringo were good actors for their first film effort.

No love for “Harvey”?

And for trivia fans, one of the girls portrayed in Heavenly Creatures grew up to be a famous mystery author. Explained alot about her books once I found out. Who knows without looking?
