You might enjoy reading “Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War” by Tony Horwitz. Pantheon, 1998. Horwitz is a modern-day, Pulitzer Prize winning, war correspondent who sets out to discover for himself the people and places, both past and present, that keep the War and its legacy simmering in the hearts and minds of Southerners everywhere. PS, I really liked this book...

I’ve always enjoyed Bruce Caton’s Civil War.

I really loathed Confederates in the Attic. I can't stand that snarky, I'm-a-sophisticated-Washington Post-"journalist"-and-I'm-way-above-these-uncultured-Southerners tone he takes. Typical WaPo writing style. I disliked it especially because people I know and am fond of appear in the book and are made to look like foolish losers.

I thought it was patronizing towards the south personally.
