When I was a teenager I thought Hendrix was supreme, but seeing those performances later, (on you tube now) he was way over rated. His ‘improvisations’ were because he was so stoned he forgot where he was and what song he was playing. You're supposed to be stoned when you listen to them, then they'll be awesome.
