We are not a democracy, however. America's Founders set up this nation as a representative Republic. The power is in the individual, not the group. Even though it appears otherwise from time to time, the USA is not governed by mob rule.

a liberal a century ago would be ashamed to be a liberal now. Of course in my dictionary the democrats aren't liberals, they are Marxist despots.

One could only wish it were so. A minority represented by certain judges has dictated to society public policy in the areas of marriage, abortion, battlefield enemies, and so much more. We live under a tyranny far worse than that of King George III.
