I know of at least half-a-dozen corners here in Tampa where gas stations have been torn down and banks have been or are being built. What’s wrong with this picture?

if you are talking about Dale Marby and Waters, that Amoco been closed for awhile and BankAtlantic wanted a bigger space.

Wal Mart is building a Murphy at their Sun City location.

the Hess and the 7-11 near me are still open.

Swann and Dale Mabry, Himes and Columbus Dr. are two that come to mind. I know there are more, but they don't come to mind right now. It just strikes me as strange that stations are closing just when demand is highest. I think the demand is in the futures market, not at the gas stations. We seem to have entered a period where actual demand for a product or service no longer controls it price, but rather what people with money to gamble think it will be worth at some point down the road.

Come to think of it though, if the supply is such that we can't even supply the existing stations to the extent of existing demand and stations are disappearing as prices skyrocket, then we're in for some really tough times.

Dale Mabry and Ehrlich Rd. is another where a station has given way to a bank.

I don't suspect any great conspiracy or anything, just making mention of the trend.
