The Dutch government says it will lift a long-standing ban on pit bulls because it did not lead to any decrease in bite incidents. Agriculture Minister Gerda Verburg has informed parliament of the decision, which follows the advice of a commission of experts appointed to review the policy. Instead, the country will focus on enforcing local leashing laws and owner education programs.

This doesn’t make sense. Just because there was no corresponding drop in the number of dog bites doesn’t mean the ban was ineffective. It just means that those who could not buy pit bulls bought Rotties or wolf hybrids instead. People who buy pit bulls want a dog that will bite. Period.

I don’t believe that is the case. The pit owners I know don’t want a biting dog, because of all the problems that would present.
