You are absolutely right about the fine line between whining and criticism. Whining can masquerade as criticism, sullying the very notion of freedom.

I think that even though criticism is a legitimate form of discourse in every context, it does have a negative impact on the freedom of expression at the molecular level.

The real boundary of freedom of expression exists where freedom is impeded by a direct action that puts a stop to the expression. An imaginary boundary of free expression exists where the abstract idea of freedom is impeded by indirect action that puts a stop to the abstract freedom of expression through the negativity inherent in criticism.

So, if we criticize someone's complaint we are diminishing his imaginary boundary - but only in our mind? Right?

So, if an imaginary boundary exists and we give it strength by observing it it is no longer imaginary but actually exists.

I found Russert far more likeable than I do Wallace. Russert was being paid to bring in an audience and generate advertising revenue. He did that well. Now NBC has to find another cash cow and they are beside themselves. They know Gregory, Wilson, Olbermann, etc. won’t be able to fill those shoes.

D) A private company offering its product for public consumption is fairly criticized for lowering the level of its product to the point of worthlessness.
E) That the news organizations really do broadcast whatever they want explains their decayed condition. No “for profit company can ignore the the customer.
F) Calling legitimate criticism “whining” is simply a means of discouraging healthy “freedom of expression”.
G) If the “boundaries of freedom of expression” are “imaginary” their diminishment could hardly be accomplished by a comparison of the worshipful eulogizing of Saint Russert with other men of equal or greater accomplishments in life.
