As far as I am concerned, Don Rickles is one of the funniest comedians ever. And Reagan, this video reminded me of one of his greatest strengths: his ability to laugh at himself.

I remember watching these roasts and just crying with laughter and when I watched this just now, I did it all over again. Hope you enjoyed it as well!

Note to Comedy Central: You're roasts are abominations in comparison. Stop. Now.

There are a whole bunch of these on YouTube - all worth watching. The overall intelligence/class/cultural level of America was so much higher back then. It’s amazing how far we’ve fallen in such a short time.

I have a number of these roasts I’ve downloaded and converted to mp4 files. I play them on the PC and my Palm. Great stuff!

I scooped up a bunch of those Dean Martin roast tapes for $1 each (unopened) at a bookstore a couple of years ago. 2 guests per tape.

They appear to have taped several a night (for later broadcast) and much of the panel each got their own turn.

I watched the Sinatra one and part of the Jack Benny roast.

They were from the mid-70s and Reagan was being ribbed about no longer being governor.

Yes these are great.

And I’ve heard tapes of the Friar roasts going back to the 1950s (maybe even 1940s).

Viacommie’s thing on Comedy Central stinks in comparison (and those Friar’s roasts made a POINT to use every profane term, even people like Maurice Chevalier and Art Linkletter let ‘em fly). But the off color roasts weren’t the thing of prime-time tv. They weren’t commercially sponsored.
