What are you trying to do to the list? I like the border and the colors, but my personal taste leans toward the table format. I'd try something like this...

What you suggest would certainly look nice but certain 'table data' boxes would have much more material, thus expanding the total length of the post.

I wanted to double space each item but it would also have been twice as long that way and it was already huge.

I don’t think it would be excessively long if you put spaces in it. The chart is shorter than the one in your profile. What if you adjusted the cellpadding and cellspacing? You could get a partial break between the lines that way.

I should add that you can run the list as a table, center align all the data, and have one item of data for each row. I won't use your background, but is this something like what you wanted?
