Emmy-Winning Actor Harvey Korman Dead at 81

LOS ANGELES — Harvey Korman, the tall, versatile comedian who won four Emmys for his outrageously funny contributions to "The Carol Burnett Show" and was seen to hilarious effect on the big screen in "Blazing Saddles," died Thursday. He was 81.

Korman died at UCLA Medical Center after suffering complications from the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm four months ago, his family said. He had undergone several major operations.

"He was a brilliant comedian and a brilliant father," daughter Kate Korman said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "He had a very good sense of humor in real life. "

A natural second banana, Korman gained attention on "The Danny Kaye Show," appearing in skits with the star. He joined the show in its second season in 1964 and continued until it was canceled in 1967. That same year he became a cast member in the first season of "The Carol Burnett Show."

Burnett and Korman developed into the perfect pair with their burlesques of classic movies such as "Gone With the Wind" and soap operas like "As the World Turns" (their version was called "As the Stomach Turns").

My favorite Carol Burnett skit was when the two men were in the cockpit as pilot and co-pilot. Carol was of course the flight attendant. She enters the cockpit (in those days you could), and says that the passengers are all served and she is so bored. The pilot and co-pilot are bored, too. Then Korman as the pilot gets an idea, winks at the others, and picks up the mike for the cabin announcements.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. There is absolutely no reason to panic. I repeat: there is NO CAUSE FOR ALARM."

Then the three are buckled over with laughter as the cabin naturally erupts in utter pandemonium.

I haven't seen that since I was probably 10 and I have never forgotten it.

There’s a scene from HIGH ANXIETY which has always stuck with me, where Mel Brooks is evaluating a patient with a fear of vampires, and Korman ( as a doctor ) hovers over them and does these lightning transformations with the teeth and everything, while Brooks looks back and forth between him and the patient. Pure genius.

The Carol Burnett Show was one of the funniest shows ever. The cast interacted very well and was perfection, IMHO. Harvey Korman will be missed. R.I.P. Harvey :(

Do yourself a favor and watch Blazing Saddles (the unedited version, of course!). So many hilarious lines - including Korman’s final line “How did he do such fantastic stunts with such little feet?”
