lol...my wife and I went to see Van Halen in Seattle a few months back and our seats weren’t that great. My wife thought shirtless, buff Eddie was actually his son Wolfgang (their bass player). When she figured it out, her, ah, “interest” was piqued. :-)

I choose these guitar players because I listen to them a lot and because they are exceptionally talented and they produce a sound that is beautiful.

Accoustic: Leo Kottke. Listen to 6 & 12 String Guitar (1969) and then to One Guitar, No Vocals (1999). 30 years apart and I can listen to these recordings over and over and have done so.

Electric: Stevie Ray Vaughan. Watch the DVD of his Austin City Limits performances. What an amazing sound and ability to create a great blues solo that is amazing to listen to. This is a crowded field and there are a lot of great players. Listen to Clapton/Cream the Live Cream first volume for the great electric blues sound. The Gibson guitar and Marshall tube amp combination produced a wailing sound that was very influential and is fascinating to hear even today.

There are about 1000 others but space is limited.

James Burton.

A friend of mine was at a guitar shop about 20 years ago and this guy strikes up a conversation with him. They talk guitars and shoot the breeze for about 30 minutes.

Finally, my friend sticks out his hand and introduces himself. The guy shakes his hand and says, "James Burton, nice to meet you."

When my wife and I saw “Van Halen” a few months ago in Seattle, David Lee Roth took a break while the three Van Halens jammed a bit, then Eddie takes one of Alex’s drumsticks and starts “finger tapping” with it without missing a beat. Eventually Alex and Wolfgang just sit it out while a lone spotlight lights up Eddie as he takes a seat on the stage and jams for about 10 minutes.

It was absolutely jaw-dropping what that guy could do with a guitar.
