From the first line on Wikipedia for "BSD":

Historically, BSD has been considered as a branch of UNIX — "BSD UNIX", because it shared the initial codebase and design with the original AT&T UNIX operating system.

You're right, it is confusing. See the problem we have in defining exactly what UNIX is? You know the situation is bad when you need a chart like this to explain it.
