Skin Deep: Love What You Didn’t Do to Your Chipped Nails
The New York Times ^ | May 22, 2008 | MELENA RYZIK

PITY the mothers and grandmothers. Visible bra straps, glaringly obvious roots — these are but a few of the grooming no-nos that have become yes-yeses in recent years.

Now there is another stylistic tic that would have been unthinkable on a proper lady in your Aunt Beatrice’s day. Over the last few years — since the era of the skull print scarf, let’s say, or the (metaphorical) rise of the Olsen twins — having streaked, chipped or just plain grotty nail polish no longer suggests drug addiction, manual labor or pure laziness. Like untied high-tops, thread-worn jeans and bedhead, it’s now part of a deliberate look.

And chipped polish is not sported solely by nail-biting school students and downtown punkers. It has been spotted uptown, in professional settings and gala parties, behind department store sales counters and even (gasp!) on beauty and fashion industry insiders.

Anyone can get caught between manicures. But now women no longer have to sit on their hands when they do.

“Before, when nail polish was chipped you absolutely had to run and get it fixed,” said Ji Baek, the owner of Rescue Beauty Lounge and a manicure doyenne who has noticed the Olsens and Lindsay Lohan with less-than-impeccable polish. Now, clients like hers are “wearing perfectly-tailored clothes, they have $5,000 bags and equally fabulous shoes, but their nails are chipped and they’re saying, ‘I don’t care.’ They don’t want to be too perfect.”

But, she noted, their polish “is so perfectly chipped.”

Being otherwise exquisitely turned out may be the key to making the undone-nails look work. (“Chipping is cool, but chipping in a schleppy way when you don’t have a $5,000 handbag is not as cool,” Ms. Baek said.)

The critters like it, too! When the two-legged thing with the red fingers walks in, they know the grain is coming...

“I don’t want to start one of those 4000-post threads about How Terrible Women Are!”

True. I see threads all the time bashing the ladies, but rarely do I see threads where you ladies bash us.

There must be a very lopsided ratio of men to women here. And I think conservative girls tend to like men more than liberal girls.

So, where are there lots of “well groomed” ladies? Ha!

Might I suggest O.P.I's 'London Bridges Falling Brown.' Its a 'warm' red (ever so slight brownish undertones). Great w/almost every skin tone (I'm wearing it now). They also have a dark bluish color (yes, dark bluish/blackish) called 'Siberian Knights' that works well also (for a trendy shade).

And in my next life, I want to work for O.P.I. naming their colors...

That sounds like a pretty color. My complexion is pale but it sounds like I could wear it well.

I'm trying to remember the name of the black polish one of them used on me, and can't, but it sounds like what she put on me. I told her I draw the line at black lipstick and a ring in my nose.

Is the polish you mentioned at regular stores or are they at upscale ones?

Salons (hair and nail) usually carry O.P.I. but I find it locally (I’m near Pittsburgh) at my grocery store (a Giant Eagle). We don’t have many here (yet) but I think WalGreens’ carries it too...its usually a dollar (or two) cheaper in the groc. stores or drug stores ($6 to $8 range). Ulta discounts too. At salons its about $9 to $10. BUT...I find it wears really, really well (as opposed to some of the cheaper ones)....but still waaaaay cheaper than ‘getting’ a manicure.

True. I see threads all the time bashing the ladies, but rarely do I see threads where you ladies bash us.

There are threads when we try to give as good as we get from the embittered woman-haters, but we are outnumbered and outgunned.

There must be a very lopsided ratio of men to women here.

Yes. Also, as a very general rule, men who are successful with women are occupied with their families or are out dating and having a good time on Friday or Saturday night, rather than posting to an online forum, so the numbers on the board are going to be somewhat skewed toward the malcontents and those poor souls whose money and children have been taken from them by worthless skank women.

It's hard to avoid noticing that the people who complain most about the opposite sex never consider that they are the ones at fault. It's easier for them to believe that half the people in the world are rotten rather than that they have some correctable problem.

And I think conservative girls tend to like men more than liberal girls.

Also true. Liberal women have for the most part drunk the Kool-Aid of blame-the-man feminism.

So, where are there lots of “well groomed” ladies? Ha!

You will find them for the most part south of the Mason-Dixon line, just not in Florida. There are lovely young women in Virginia, the Carolinas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. Lots in Texas--Texas girls are famous for keeping their hair and nails nice. Plastic surgery is everywhere, however.

Good luck.

I haven't been to one of those since the mid 80's. I got hair of the frog and HAD to go.

We have a new Walgreen's here. The next time I go to town I'll stop by there and see if they carry it. I don't think the $9 - $10 price is too steep. Revlon is about 5-6 dollars and it wears off very easily. Of course hand washing dishes several times a day might have something to do with it wearing off on the tips.

Women do not dress for men they dress to upstage other women, just an observation.

Then the women of the free world can sleep soundly tonight knowing my tee shirts and shorts or pedal pushers are not going to upstage them. lol

Chipped polish still looks better than loads of cuticle and/or dirty finger nails.

True, but there's a middle ground. I prefer not to polish my nails, but I do take care of my hands and keep my nails clean, shaped, and trimmed to a nice length (between 1/8 and 1/4 inch). My regimen takes about 10 minutes every three weeks or so and doesn't cost me a dime.

Sometimes true. Depends on what stage in a relationship the woman is in, if any, and what her connection is to the women she'll be seeing, if any.
