Fayetteville, N.C. — Wildlife agents are scouring the woods near Cedar Creek after a man says he spotted what looks like a king cobra there last week.

Vernon Byrd was on an all-terrain vehicle in a field off Johnson Road last Tuesday when he said an 8-foot-long snake reared up beside him – and the serpent's head was about shoulder high to him.

"I caught something out of my eye, and this snake comes up beside me and looked at me," Byrd said. "I've seen every kind of snake in this part of the country, but I've never seen a snake like this."

A King Cobra was reported in the Everglades by a friend who is a man of such character and education as to be an unimpeachable source.

When he contacted the Serpentarium, the owner said another had been reported north of Lake Okeechobee. He hoped they would not meet and reproduce.

First thing I thought of when I read this was “Florida.”

They are having major problems there with exotic animals.

Makes me feel kinda silly worrying about ticks, copperheads, or stumbling upon an occassional moonshine still when hiking here in the Tennessee woods.

Or it could be a really slick way of keeping other people out of the area where you want to hunt or fish...

Gee, never thought about using that tactic. There could be a really big buck up there.

I have some poachers operating in my woods surrounding my house. Anyone know where I can get a King Cobra realistic looking plastic snake to put out in their operating area? I could cut it open and put one of those bouncing mechanisms in toys to make it realistic. (LOL)

I am serious, I have a feud going up here in my mountaintop home with some local yokal rednecks. I think I have them “skeered” already, but this could be an added effect.

Instead of a cobra you might use the most feared animals in the forest -- skunks (deodorized, of course, but only you will know that). Of course it could be bad for your pet skunks if the good ole' boys are trigger happy. Maybe you should just go to the local newspaper and report seeing a king cobra.

Haven’t seen many skunks around here, except a few at my deer feeder.

Also, not sure how to deoderize a skunk, not sure I want to find out how to do this (grin). And believe me, I don’t have pet skunks, I avoid them at great distance.

Like I said, I got them “good ‘ol Boys” already scared. It’s a long story, but apparently it’s working, as they have been absent since I declared war on them.

I use taking pics of their car tags, hanging trail cameras, and other evidence I know they are there to deter them (human idiots).

I’m not too worried about the critters around here, but I despise the poachers, and take special pleasure in making their lives miserable.

Are you sure that you aren’t dealing with meth labs? Those meth heads are even worse than the moonshiners. I’d be worried if they were your neighbors.

I hope you are armed and dangerous (if need be) because they probably are.
