Need help with Linux and Ubuntu (Vanity)
Self

Posted on 05/19/2008 2:43:34 AM PDT by LuLuLuLu

I really, really need some help here. Long story short, I've lost two old computers in the last few months and now have a box that is running on Linux with Ubuntu and Firefox. As far as I can tell, Firefox does not allow me to just copy and paste the LOLCat pictures... There goes my entertainment!

I have no connectivity problems, but I think I'm showing my age. I 'grew up' with DOS based apps and I can't find anything!

I have printer software that I need to install, and can't find the right way to do it. Cry for me, OK? Or point me in the right direction. A search on Linux timed out.

And if you have any answers, please type slowly so I can understand. FReepMail is fine if you don't want to steal the bandwidth from the real problems of the world.

Thanks!

I’m writing this through Ubuntu 7.10/Firefox

OK...you already answered the question I just ask...So...let's see....checking Distor Watch we have:

Now it could be that it would make sense to move to this later relaease..(after making an effort with what you currently have ) .not sure what difficulties you would have in getting a copy....but it is a LTS Long Term Support....

OK....

Micro Center has a store in the Cincinnati area:

Cincinnati/Sharonville

As one possibility...They likely will have a good book section and a recent copy of UBUNTU Unleased...which is currently covering 7.10....

8.04 is too New ...

**********************************

HMM!....

Maybe the easiest fix is to borrow a friends printer that is on the support list...or a quick visit to Staples or Best Buy for a HP Printer that is on the support list....

Well,...now I come across this thread:

HP Printer doesn't print in Breezy

**************************EXCERPT*********

I fixed my 712C by going into the .conf file and forcing it to use only the 712C option by commenting out everything else except my printer. (I think it was trying to use 720 by default).

Printers are now automatically configured by merely plugging them in and turning them on. Printer setup cannot get any easier!

sudo apt-get install alien libstdc++5

wget -c -P /tmp/

http://www.downloaddelivery.com/srfilecache/CJLZ35LE-CUPS-2.0-1.TAR.GZ

pushd /tmp

tar -xvzf CJLZ35LE-CUPS-2.0-1.TAR.GZ

tail -n +143 lexmarkz35-CUPS-2.0-1.gz.sh > install.tar.gz

tar -xvzf install.tar.gz

sudo alien —to-deb *.rpm

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

sudo ldconfig

popd

cd /usr/share/cups/model

sudo gunzip Lexmark-Z35-lxz35cj-cups.ppd.gz

sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart

ROFL
