It became the "Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma" on 4 January 1974,
WWWhhhaaaaa????
The Domino Theory was an informal premise that if the United States gave up the struggle for South Vietnam, the other nations of South East Asia would topple like dominoes and go socialist/communist behind them.
Looks like Burma went Socialist (at least in name) during the last year or so of our waning commitment to Vietnam. I’m guessing the OP is wondering aloud if Burma was the first Domino.
“Democratic rule ended in 1962 when General Ne Win led a military coup d’état. He ruled for nearly 26 years and pursued policies under the rubric of the Burmese Way to Socialism. Between 1962 and 1974, Burma was ruled by a Revolutionary Council headed by the general, and almost all aspects of society (business, media, production) were nationalized or brought under government control (including the Boy Scouts).[27] In an effort to consolidate power, General Ne Win and many top generals resigned from the military and took civilian posts and, from 1974, instituted elections in a one party system. Between 1974 and 1988, Burma was effectively ruled by General Ne Win through the Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSPP).[28]” from Wikipedia
The forecasted death toll is expected to top the ‘06 Tsunami. Maybe double that, if the junta stays the murderous course it’s taken.
It’s been said today maybe China will step in to alleviate the suffering.
I wasn't aware there was a tsunami of any consequence in 2006.
One of many dominos. Ethiopia and Angola and Laos and Cambodia and Tanzania were dominos, too, and Nicaragua and Grenada and and and....
Burma is a military kleptocracy of a type that has been common for centuries in the area and elsewhere. It uses the term socialism to describe itself because the term is popular, much as commies called their countries “democratic republics” when they were neither republican nor democratic.
