Please quick help with computer
May 2, 2008 | Hildy

Posted on 05/02/2008 8:24:30 AM PDT by Hildy

I spilled my cereal and milk on my laptop computer keyboard this morning...I cleaned it right away, but now my computer won't even boot up..Nothing.

Anything I can do immediately? Will I be able to save the hard drive at least?

Thanks.

May I suggest that you put the darn thing down while eating?!

Seriously, I have also done this repair. Admittedly it is a last resort, and it hasn’t always worked, but if you don’t get the acid out, anything else is just wasting your time.

At Christmastime, my dear sainted mother-in-law showered my laptop with Mountain Dew.

Pouring directly into your stereo does not do your receiver good!

Mine wasn't a laptop, so it might make a difference but, the same thing happened to me a few months back and I posted a thread for help. My son spilled his cereal on my keyboard. The letters were coming out all jumbled and couldn't be read because they mad no sense. It dried on it's own and was normal again.

Lol... experience is a teacher!

I was drying off the internal mechanism of a DVD drive, when I put the dryer too close, and it warped one of the plastic gears.

"...people in Haiti are eating dirt pies. Dirt, water, butter and salt and cooked up because they can’t afford food."

What a great "perspective" you have. God bless you.

Just a little FYI...while I personally prefer Sager Laptops, other manufacturers offer accidental incident coverage on their laptops that would cover this 100%, Toshiba being one that I know of. As well, your homeowners insurance may cover it, too. Although, if you're like me, you prolly wouldn't go that route.

Good luck!

I do laptop support for Missionaries. We have a couple of thousand, so I have seen all sorts of things happen.

They have keyboard condoms just for this occasion.

Try the one size fits all, available at your local pharmacy........they're cheaper and the check out gal won't giggle when she rings them up.

I once spilled a case of Guinness on my favorite comb and the next day all the teeth were crooked.

This calls for a SpillSock.

No way would I follow your advice. You know there is still a small battery inside called a keep-alive battery that would short out after you submersed the laptop in water.

Even if you removed that battery, no way would I follow your advice.

I say let it dry out for a couple of days, maybe in the sunlight, then plug it in and see what happens. I did something similar with a glass of milk, and mine came back.
