When fishing down in the Sea of Cortez in Baja we have caught many of these squid. We use some for bait but have eaten them as well. The largest ones we caught were about four feet but usually they were smaller. They taste fine but maybe the larger ones are not as good. We fried some up and it tasted great. We stayed at one place near a panga fleet that specifically targeted the Rojo Diablo. One of the local families picnicked near us and whipped up a batch of calamari ceviche that she proceeded to feed us. It was also very good.

I love calamari and order it when we’re at a restaurant with decent seafood.

Years ago (50’s) squid were plentiful off So CA. Fishing boats would have them in their bait tanks when we’d go out for yellowtail, excellent bait.
