Why, it's obviously for purely decorative purposes, since Knut would peacefully coexist with them if he were a nice polar bear.

The wild animal did what wild animals instinctively do.

The activists who were so upset that the wild animal was being confined to a zoo should be thrilled at this behavior.

Apparently, to control the algae. It's kind of like putting mice in a cat's bowl to clean up stray bits of cheese, huh?

Probably as something to keep him occupied, as well as for nutritious snacks. I'm sure that it's cheaper, easier, and less traumatic to the public than keeping the mote stocked with seals. Remember, we're dealing with the top predator of the arctic here. In addition to keeping him fed, they also need to provide him with something to keep him occupied as well, otherwise they get a seriously disturbed animal. After all, he's a polar bear. He can't get on the Internet and Freep!
