That being said, my guess is that this is a matter of another lonely lady conflating overfeeding with love. Everyone is delighted and awestruck by the huge kitty until it dies of renal or cardiac failure secondary to profound, morbid obesity.
Some extremely lonely people fill their homes with 500 cats and are shocked when the neighbors complain and the city comes in and bulldozes the house as a toxic waste hazard. Others overfeed their pets to the point at which it becomes lethal to the animal.
Pets give unconditional love (or at least are perceived as doing so by many) and that's a difficult thing to deal with rationally when you have an owner who is extremely depressed and lonely.
