How many clowns can you fit in a car? I'm still not sure, but supposedly we'll soon all be able to compress the sh*t out of our MP3s and get 20 million onto an iPod. Good luck finding 20 million songs you actually like...

If the evil anti-audiophilic professors at the University of Rochester manage to release their new compression technology without Arcam and Denon product managers hacking into their PCs and deleting the relevant witchcraft files.

They're working on technology which will shrink MP3 file size down to a 1,000th of its size, so an 80GB iPod could hold 20 million tracks instead of the advertised 20,000. I suggest we all brandish our IXOS cables and go beat up those Rochester professors. This Friday good for all?

Ok, well, I got an Ipod for Christmas, and I'm pretty much maxed out in terms of the songs I want to have on it, at about 1,000. Sure, I could load whole albums: what's the point? 10 of the 12 songs per album weren't any good to begin with.

The great thing about the download revolution is that is has forced the music industry, and especially the artists, to try to stop making so much crap (whether they succeed is up to the market). No longer can you say, "well, we need 12 songs, and I have this junk that no one would buy, but we can put it on the . . . ALBUM." Not any more. So the truly great music (in the eyes of the consumers) is instantly identifiable on itunes when you look at "popularity." Those little bars aren't always right---everyone has his own tastes---but they are usually right. Usually, a song with no bars means a sucky song.

A Phil Collins fan could probably do that.

Repeating the same song over and over while just changing the title does not count.

I grew up when we had ‘close and play’ record players, and have spent enough years on the flightline that it doesn’t matter how much you compress the music - just play it back loud and I’ll be content.

I find some B-side classics in the "no bars". I'm astounded by what most people miss, but they're not old as dirt either.

Correctamundo. I hope this brings back singles.

I’d love to be able to compress a few hundred DVDs onto my ipod. Of course, the screen is so small you can barely see the nipples.....

Nah, this is too good for them. I suggest slow torture - Fifteen minutes of Nelly Furtado, then fifteen minutes of Kenny G, then 15 minutes of Barbra Streisand, then repeat. All on MP3, amplified through Crown amplifier and some white wan speakers. Until they come to their senses. Actually, ANY MP3 should be treated that way. It is plain evil, no better than nicotine, MSG, nutrasweet or other poisons taken out of convenience. IPod and other hard drive players can be loaded with lossLESS music. There is no excuse to consuming MP3, except to help music companies make profit without selling any substance. Loading Ipod with MP3 is no different than clogging your arteries with Transfats, because it is convenient. Remember how companies claimed that transfats are needed for packaged food to be tasty? When people rebelled, all of sudden, there is no transfats in food any longer. Ditto for MP3. If enough people STOP paying $1 a pop for a crappy MP3 and REQUEST Lossless file for $1 instead, Rotten Appple and other music vendors will have to offer lossless or go bust.

Heck, you already can... I think I have about 1200 songs, 15-16 movies, Firefly, the entire first season of Doctor Who, and 3 dozen music videos on my iPod, and It still only takes up about 14-15 gigs of space (half of my ipod, and either 1/5 or 1/10 of the iPod classic depending on the size). My only problem is, while it’s amazing for road trips, train rides, etc., the battery only lasts for about 5 hours of video.
