Having gone through a lot of these kinds of things with my Dad, I know it can be a long process.
And the VA does have good people. My GF is a nurse at the VA here in Indy, met a lot of her co-workers. Good, smart people.

Having been down that road you are on I can tell you there are some excellent, dedicated surgeons and scientists in the vascular arena.
My problem was also veinous and I wear a sock or full compression brace on occasion. That was after a year of injections, medications, and a lot of pain.
I would suggest asking about building too much of a resistance to the anti-biotics. that could complicate matters while you heal.
