My brother lives about 10 miles from Mauna Lea (sic). A 5 gallon jug of drinking water costs over $50. Why. Water wells must be drilled to over 5000' depth in order to gather potable water. The sea water is filtered through those thousands of feet of volcanic ash, (after all the islands are vocanic in nature), and is purified. All the homes catch rainwater for bathing, washing dishes and clothes and other non drinking needs.

When my brother built his home he used his water treatment knowledge to use the rainwater from his cistern for drinking as well.

I offered to finance a business where he could deliver potable water at a cost cheaper than the $50/jug price but he didn't see the profitability so he demurred. Of course he has a nice large lot and planted coffee trees which means he doesn't have to go to Starbucks!!!
