Randolph, Iowa (KPTM) - An Iowa mayor takes extreme measures to get wild cats off the streets.
It's a plan that's drawing a lot of criticism.
It's usually quiet on Main Street in Randolph, Iowa.
But, drive a few blocks north and west and it's not long before you see one stray cat after another.
"There's been a cat problem in this town for 11 years," says Randolph resident Sam Lupo.
Lupo says he owns two cats, the rest of the two or three random cats running around in the yard are strays.
"They're not wanted around here, they run around become a nuisance, get into trash and tear it up," says Lupo.
After several complaints Randolph city leaders are now asking for help.
The mayor's plan, is to put a bounty on all cats, so if you can lure one to you and catch it, it'll earn you five bucks.
Any stray cat or dog that doesn't have tags or a collar will be taken to a Sidney vet and put down.
"Either people keep their cats in or like dogs, if they keep 'em under control we shouldn't have a problem, it's just the stray ones and cats propagate quite frequently," says Randolph city councilman Allen Wendland.
Chasidy Wederquist calls the plan ridiculous.
"As a person who likes animals I don't think a bounty is the best thing for them to do."
She agrees there's a cat problem, but says killing them is not the answer.
"I think the county here should get something here, get a (animal control) department like Omaha and Council Bluffs," says Wederquist.
Dozens more agree.
Outraged community members vented their disgust on the city's community web site, calling the bounty inhumane and a danger to family pets.
City leaders disagree.
"There's not much of a bounty on 'em to where people are gonna make a lot of money on it," says Wendland.
If the city can identify the animal as a pet, it will be returned to the owner.
But, the big concern some people have, you won't be able to tell if it's someone's pet or not.
Even some animal rescue groups are scared people will take pets, pull off their collars just so they can get the money.
The city council meeting in Randolph is Thursday.
You can vent your concerns there. Councilman Wendland says no one has called him to complain and he says no cats have been turned in so far.
That was a response to you stating that ‘I would wish YOU were there (with your guns) in specific situations.’ I’m telling you I can take care of myself because ‘I carry my own guns.’
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Society actually. They're hardly a 'bird society'.
And go to http://www.alleycat.org/ to learn the truth about homeless cats.
A cat society? Truth? A bunch of whacked out old ladies most likely....
And songbirds carry and leave disaese in your lawn....IF cats were actually killing these birds, they'd be doing humans a favor.
Didn't know I was dealing with a sick bird hater....

This county --PB---tried to legalize the shooting of feral cats for the FWC too -like Wisconsin....a few years ago. When the feral cat society got them on the phone --they forgot to hang up the phone at the end of the conversation. The Feral cat people ..have ON TAPE, the officer stating he 'couldn't wait to get out and blow the cats away'...and everyone in the room laughed with him. This is the Florida Wildlife Commission....the ones who blew away Bobo-- that tiger of Steve Sipek (he played tarzan) in Loxahatchee. The FWC is not too respected in this county....they are bunch of low life coward losers.
HAHAHA! Has he got his tongue sticking out?
The *raspberry* is very appropriate here!
“Its sad to know there are barbarians in here....”
I am not a barbarian.
I love cats and other mammals. They are excellent protein sources
I wonder what this idiot thinks the animal control departments do with unclaimed strays...
On the other hand, there are a number of no-kill shelters in IA, I'd suggest that she support them with her own dollars. It's not cheap to run these things. But my guess is that she's a liberal, which means that it's an OPM problem (Other People's Money).

Well said.
So do wolves and bears and mountain lions. Do you want them running around in your neighborhood?
It is a form of cruelty to keep cats inside all the time....they arent meant for that.
I disagree. Cats do wonderfully indoors, as long as that's how they've been raised (though many who were once "outdoor cats" do quite well, without bolting for an open door or window.) And as a cat lover and longtime cat owner, I've seen indoor cats lead longer, happier lives than outdoor cats. I've had outdoor cats hit by cars, attacked by other animals, and even the neutered males will still get into fights.
The fact is that responsible pet owners will keep their pets under their control. And if they do escape, which does sometimes happen, they'll have identification to have them returned.

My kid just adopted a “pound dog” - actually, a really beautifull German Sheperd.
So far, his “adoption” has cost me north of $500 in deworming treatments, etc.
Really? I had an (outdoor) cat that the vet had to put down, having picked up feline aids from another cat, and not any of the neighbors' cats.

I know what you mean. I once had the most adorable little cat, and surgery to fix a "detached diaphragm" cost me about $600.
I have a friend in Des Moines who's an animal lover (and she supports PETA - ugh) who's terribly hard to buy a birthday present for: For her birthday, I got her a gift "adoption" for an animal at "Animal Lifeline," a no-kill shelter for animals that can't be adopted. It was a couple of hundred dollars to help them pay the huge bills that it costs to run. It's a good organization for people like her, and it keeps her from donating money to PETA!

That is not only funny, it is devious.
At least my kid got a GS out of the deal.
No...don’t put words in my mouth.....
I thought we were referring to passing on diseases to people. It’s birds that can give you tons of diseases.....I suppose if you get scratched or bitten by any animal, it can make you sick.
I forgot to mention Fawn, when I was younger, we used to shoot cats, bar-b-q the meat and skin their hides then hang them on the wall in the living room. But because cats are notorious for shedding, we had nothing but a pile of fur on the floor by spring time.......it was awful on the alergies.
~ quartered and cleaned squirrels, 1 per person
~ buttermilk
~ OldBay seasoning
~ flour
~ salt & pepper
~ shortening
Soak your meat for at least an hour in buttermilk.
Combine the flour & OldBay until you can see the flour turn light pink. Sprinkle in some salt and pepper to taste.
Heat up your shortening to 375 degrees in a iron skillet or deep fryer deep enough to cover the meat.
Roll or shake your meat in the flour mix and fry until the coating is golden brown.
Take it out and place it on a rack to drain. Place it in your oven for about 1/2 hour at 275 degrees.
Serve and Enjoy!
