Double-space after a period? That is so old school. (Although I can't say if the MLA or others have pronounced on that subject, either).

It is not old school or new school.
For typing with a monospace typeface (e.g. Courier, Letter Gothic), two spaces are used after a period. For typesetting with a proportional typeface (e.g. Times Roman, Helvetica, most others), a single space is used. That is the way it was (pick up a 100 year-old typeset book) and the way it is (look at a monospaced legal document).
Who uses the liberal MLA? They were leaders in the so-called gender-neutral language garbage?
