Only Now

It’s only now that I notice,
No matter how long it has been,
That the Future’s divided the same way,
From the past by the moment we’re in.

Only now has it started to settle,
In a brain that’s been slowing for years,
That the pace of the world doesn’t speed or slow,
Except when it’s sharpened by tears.

They say that the eye grows misty,
But the teardrop can act as a lens,
Like Leeuwenhoek’s early microscope,
When we focus on might-have-beens.

We’re all middle-aged for a lifetime,
As we focus on what’s been and how,
It has shaped what is likely to come about,
Through the funnel of only now.
