BRISBANE, Australia (AP) -- A 16-foot python stalked a family dog for days before swallowing the pet whole in front of horrified children in the Australian tropics, animal experts said Wednesday.
The boy and girl, aged 5 and 7, watched as the scrub python devoured their silky terrier-Chihuahua crossbreed Monday at their home near Kuranda in Queensland state.
Stuart Douglas, owner of the Australian Venom Zoo in Kuranda, said scrub pythons typically eat wild animals such as wallabies, a smaller relative of the kangaroo, but sometimes turn to pets in urban areas.
"It actively stalked the dog for a number of days," Douglas said.
"The family that owned the dog had actually seen it in the dog's bed, which was a sign it was out to get it," he added.

Ok, this is disgusting but I still laughed.
So they let a 16 foot python hang around a home with pets and children? Morons.
And that children, is the law of the jungle.
Reminder that if you see a 16-foot python in your backyard doghouse, get a machete and go to work!
“And that children, is the law of the jungle.”
as old and as true as the sky;
And the Chihuahua that keeps it may prosper, but the Chihuahua that breaks it must die.
See 16 ft. snake in dog’s bed. Kill 16 ft. snake in dog’s bed. Then there is no need to call anyone; there is no story, and the kids can play with their dog.
If you have a little dog and want a snake, get a spread natter! (Not that they have spread natters in Australia!)
The only lethal measure recommended is a long-handled shovel or hoe to kill the snake by severing the head from the body. DO NOT handle the head of a venomous snake alive or dead. A recently killed snake may bite by reflex action. Venomous snakes should only be killed if their presence endangers humans or pets. More than 80% of snakebites occur when a person is trying to kill or handle a snake. If the snake is encountered outdoors, the best defense is to back slowly away from it.
. . .
Now, it would take a lot of work to sever the head from the body of a 16 foot python with a hoe. That said it would be exciting.
I've never seen a shotgun that takes that long to load.
IIRC, Chihuahuas were the Aztecs chickens; looks like this one met its destiny.
"I know, Bob."
--three days later--
"Sheila, the kids say that python is swallowing our dog."
"I know, Bob."
This is pretty funny
sad, I love dogs and hate smakes
Some parents there. To set this up for for young children to witness was utterly insensitive.
“Mom, can you make some popcorn?”
Doggone.
Somebody alert PeTA.
With all the trigger locks required in California I have.
