All the good sci-fi writing is on television these days. Lost, Heroes, Jericho, Battlestar Galactica, etc. Sci-Fi and FX channels make their own movies and series, some are pretty good.
Movies are junk, but I liked Cloverfield and Transformers.
Not to mention, (IMO) THE best sci-fi series...or ANY series, for that matter:
