Plot and substance sacrificed to special effects grandstanding. Everything is too slick, I like a bit of grittiness.

Among my favorites:

70’s
Soylent Green
Rollerball
Star Wars

80’s
Road Warrior
Blade Runner

My favorite was and still is the Forbidden Planet (1956) It had the creepiest music, the scariest monster “the ID”, the coolest robot, and one of the prettiest girls in the movies at the time Anne Francis.

The most disappointing Sci Fi movie was the first release of Dune. We waited so danged long for that thing, and it came out perverted and ugly.

Yes. I would like to see a return to the “minimal scifi flicks” where instead of bombarding you with tons of technology, introduce just one new thing into a completely earthy, gritty, low-tech, down to earth environment, and tells the story of how people react.

12 Monkeys, Predator, Frequency, Pitch Black, Escape from New York, Mad Max series as you mention.
