DBRUM?
me ^ | 2/8/08

Posted on 02/08/2008 11:52:04 AM PST by LouAvul

I'm having trouble with my wireless connection with my other desktop. The system is Linksys Wireless-G broadband router and wireless adapter.

This morning I downloaded all available software and hardware updates from Microsoft. (OS=XP home)

There was an update for my Linksys router from MS. I included it into the download. I also downloaded IE 7.

Now my wireless connection doesn't work. Windows can't fix it. Plus when I go to the Linksys icon and click on the tab "Site Survey," the SSID shows not only me, but something called DBRUM. And that DBRUM is on the same channel.

Has the download screwed something up? And is "DBRUM" a hacker/neighbor? Cause if it/he is, how can I hack back into his system for payback?

Can you back out of upgrade and see if it works?

In your wireless, scan for networks, attach to yours

How are you asking this if your wireless not working, another computer?

DBRUM is a neghbor if it’s on the site survey.
you can go to linksys.com and d/l the wireless-g software AND the newest BIOS for your router and then reinstall the BIOS, then uninstall your current linksys software then reinstall the linksys software you just d/l’ed.

Install the BIOS from a WIRED pc connected to the router.

Do you have a wireless icon in your task tray? If so, double click on it and on the left side of the dialogue box, choose “show all networks” or “refresh”. There’s only one option but I forgot the exact name. Once you click on that option, all your available wireless channels are seen. Click your Linksys and connect. I’m doing this from memory.

I did a System Restore and got back onto the internet. I was posting from another computer.

I'm not sure how to do the recommended procedure, but I'll try.

Am I supposed to do it (download the new BIOS) from the host/main computer?

No, no, no.

Just because someone else uses the same 802.11x channel as you does not necessarily make them a hacker.

The Linksys router only uses 11 channels, and assigns #9 (I think) as a default.

Choose another channel via your setup at least 2 channels away (like it says in the instruction manual -- you know, the one that looks like a small book) to avoid the channel interference.

Ok. Cause I was just about to go burn his house down. And that would be tough cause it's all brick.

Could be worse...could be a steel house.

Fire cannot melt steel.

< |:)~

Also look into doing the following:

As someone else mentioned, make the above changes with a connection wired directly to the router, not wirelessly.

Fire cannot melt steel.

That would depend greatly on the definition of 'fire'.

Everything burns. Everything. Depends on temperature.

A house fire will not melt steel.

Ah. Missed that. I pay so very little attention to her.
Even less of what comes out of her maw.

You'll have to explain it to me over a beer someday.
