Oh, my, my, my goodness.... I Must Not Gloat. That would be unseemly. Must Not Gloat. Sigh... Must Not ... weeeell, maybe if I posted just a few pertinent lil facts.... that wouldn't be gloating... not really.. :)

SEC IN SUPER BOWL XLII

20 former SEC football student-athletes are on the active rosters of the two participating teams in Super Bowl XLII, representing 10 of the 12 SEC institutions. The New England Patriots have 13 former SEC stars while the New York Giants have seven.

New England Patriots (13)
LB Eric Alexander, LSU
OT Wesley Britt, Alabama
RB Heath Evans, Auburn
RB Kevin Faulk, LSU
WR Jabar Gaffney, Florida
CB Randall Gay, LSU
DL Jarvis Green, LSU
WR Chad Jackson, Florida
DL Rashad Moore, Tennessee
DL Richard Seymour, Georgia
WR Donte' Stallworth, Tennessee
WR Kelley Washington, Tennessee
TE Ben Watson, Georgia

New York Giants (7)
CB Kevin Dockery, Mississippi State
QB Jared Lorenzen, Kentucky
QB Eli Manning, Ole Miss
LB Reggie Torbor, Auburn
CB Corey Webster, LSU
S Gibril Wilson, Tennessee
QB Anthony Wright, South Carolina

This list does not include New York Giants RB Brandon Jacobs, who lettered at Auburn for one season, before transferring to Southern Illinois University.

Then, of course, there was the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award... recognizing an NFL player's off-the-field community service as well as his playing excellence.... Hines Ward (University of Jawja) now of the Pittsburgh Steelers won the award this year and Jason Witten (University of Tennessee) now of the Dallas Cowboys was one of the four finalists.

Oh, uh.... one more teeny-weenie little ole fact... Yesterday Howie Long announced the name of his annual Ultimate Tough Guy of the 2007 NFL Sesson Award to the very tough but extremely nice Jason Witten. The award is accompanied by a $50,000.00 check presented to Jason Witten's hometown high school athletic department in tiny Elizabethton, Tennessee. Where Jason's brother Shawn is the head football coach following in the footsteps of their grandfather the former football coach.

I'm sad for the Pats.... it must be beyond tough to work so hard all year and come so close to a perfect season then seeing it come to an end in the span of a few hours. Gotta hurt.

I'm happy for the Giants... facing the biggest game of their lives, the odds stacked against them, few giving them a prayer of winning. Every commentator, sportswriter and Monday Morning Quarterback dissing and comparing their QB to Brady and finding him lacking.

I'm thrilled for the entire Manning family. They are all much loved in this part of the country. What a wonderful feeling it must be for Archie and Olivia to have two sons playing in back to back Super Bowls, both winning and both named MVP.

In the first 3 quarters Eli was good, fairly solid. In the 4th he played as good as any quarterback in that stadium last night ever played in a single game... Brady, Peyton, Bradshaw, Williams, Young, Aikman, etc. The poise and discipline he showed in the final 75 seconds was simply amazing for a young man playing in the biggest game of his life.

Aw, heck.... I knew I’d forgotten sumpin. :) Marquis Hill, the New England Patriot and former LSU football standout who died tragically last May in a boating accident on Lake Pontchartrain. He would have brought the total number of former SEC players in last night’s Super Bowl to 21.
