I remember someone saying on FR that she would commit suicide before the month was out.
Today is the 60th anniversary of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. I remember that day very well, I was ashore in Madras with my friend and we saw crowds gathering, shouting and destroying property. Things began to look very ugly.
Of course, we had no idea of what had happened. At that time no one knew who had done it, Hindu, Sikh or Muslim. A shopkeeper rushed up to us and told us to come to his shop as Gandhi had been assassinated and there would be riots.
Then we heard the recall gun from our ship in the harbor, so we took off to return to the ship and within a few hours we were on our way to Calcutta where there was a much larger British population to protect.
There, students were already stopping buses and throwing acid on the passengers, burning cars and trashing the city. Civil war was about to break out.
